How to Cook with Sea Moss?

Cooking with sea moss is very easy and within everybody’s grasp. Both sea moss gel and sea moss powder incorporate very well in any kind of food or drink recipe.

Sea moss, also known as Chondrus crispus or Irish moss, is an edible seaweed found in the Atlantic Ocean. It's also one of the best superfoods on earth!

Sea moss usually gives your recipes a creamier and thicker consistency and can often substitute gelatin or other food thickeners. Besides, the taste of sea moss gel is almost unnoticeable when mixed with other ingredients.

We recommend adding sea moss at the last minute once all the other ingredients are ready and cooked. The idea is to avoid boiling sea moss gel, as high temperatures may destroy some of its nutrients.

10 reasons to add sea moss to your recipe

  1. Sea moss is a nutritional powerhouse.
  2. It naturally supplements your body with 92 minerals and vitamins

Chondrus crispus nutrition facts

Although sea moss has its own specificities, it is nutritionally similar to other edible seaweeds like kelp, nori, or wakame. On average, one serving of sea moss (2 tbsp / 10 grams) contains:

  • Calories: 4.9
  • Fat: 0.016 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Sodium: 6.7 mg
  • Carbohydrates: 1.23 g
  • Fiber: 0.25 g
  • Sugar: 0.061 g
  • Protein: 0.25 g

Nutrition facts may vary slightly from one sea moss seaweed to another. This is because seaweeds absorb nutrients in the water they grow. Therefore, while wildcrafted sea moss is generally very nutrient-rich, the pool-grown kind (fake sea moss) has little nutritional value.

How much sea moss to use when cooking?

The most important thing when cooking with sea moss is to stick to a safe dose. Sea moss is very safe to use but can also be dangerous when overconsumed, mainly because of its high iodine content.

It’s generally agreed that 1 to 4 tablespoons of sea moss gel per day is a highly efficient yet safe amount for most people. Bear that dosage in mind when adding sea moss to your recipe, and always calculate a safe amount of sea moss per serving.

Strawberry and banana sea moss ice cream

Did you know that the food industry has been using sea moss to make ice creams for decades? More precisely, the carrageenan contained in high amounts in sea moss is widely used as a food thickener and stabilizer in industrial ice creams, soups, etc.

Of course, homemade sea moss ice creams are an even tastier and healthier alternative, as you can control the ingredients yourself. Besides, you can get super creative and imagine any flavors of your choice.

Here’s one of our favorites, the strawberry and banana sea moss ice cream:

Ingredients (4 small-size servings):

  • 3 frozen bananas
  • 10 big frozen strawberries
  • 6 tablespoons sea moss gel
  • 1 teaspoon sugar-free vanilla flavor
  • ½ can of cream
  • ½ can condensed milk

Instructions:

Take the frozen bananas and strawberries out of the freezer 10 minutes before starting, so they thaw a little bit.

Then, add all the ingredients into a high-powered blender and blend until smooth.

We suggest freezing your sea moss ice cream until it is solid for about 2-4 hours before consuming it.

You can substitute the bananas and strawberries with any of your preferred fruits too!

4. Sea Moss Cookie recipe

Yes, you can bake cookies with sea moss too! Actually, you can make any baked goods with sea moss.

We use sea moss powder instead of gel for our sea moss cookie recipe. However, we recommend using the gel for creamier desserts like puddings or cheesecakes.

To bake with sea moss, we use Organics Nature’s sea moss and collagen powder (vanilla and caramel flavor).

Organics Nature Sea Moss powder - Vanilla Caramel flavour

These cookies enriched with sea moss are just as nutritious and healthy as yummy! But if you already have your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, simply add 2 scoops of sea moss powder to the dough.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 4 scoops Organics Nature Sea Moss Collagen Powder (Vanilla & Caramel flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ¾ cup dairy-free butter
  • 1/3 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup dairy-free chocolate chips
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Instructions:

Mix the honey, butter, almond milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until you get a creamy brown mixture.

Mix the coconut sugar, salt, baking soda, and sea moss collagen powder in a different bowl. Add the flour until you get a sifted mixture.

Add small amounts of the flour mixture into the liquid mixture. Take pauses in between and keep mixing before adding more of the flour mixture.

Once everything is mixed, and you get a nice smooth dough, add the chocolate chips.

Grease a baking pan with oil or butter, or use baking paper, so the cookie dough does not stick. Take a spoon and scoop the cookie dough onto the baking pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Enjoy your sea moss cookies, hot or cold, with a cup of tea, coffee, or sea moss hot chocolate.

5. Blueberry Sea Moss Jam recipe

Sea moss jam recipe

Another great way to add sea moss to your daily routine is to make a sea moss jam. This one may very well be my favorite recipe, mainly because it's so versatile and delicious.

If, like me, you enjoy a classic PB&J (peanut butter and jelly sandwich), use homemade sea moss jam instead of a store-bought industrial one. Not only will it taste amazing, but it's much healthier and gives a significant nutrient boost.

So, here's our 5-ingredients, 20-minute blueberry sea moss jam recipe:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Add the lemon juice, blueberries, and maple syrup into a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a low boil for about 5 minutes.

Mash the blueberries with a wooden spoon, so they release their juice.

Turn the heat to medium-high for about 10 minutes until the liquid is reduced by half. Stir well to make sure the jam does not stick to the saucepan.

Turn off the heat and add the sea moss gel. Stir until it's completely dissolved into the jam.

Once the jam has cooled, pour it into an airtight food container. There are no preservatives here, so keep your sea moss jam refrigerated and use it within one week or freeze it.

6. Sea Moss Apple Sauce Recipe

Sea moss apple sauce recipe

I personally love to have sea moss apple sauce! First, because it’s super easy and quick to make. Second, because it tastes great. And third, because it combines apples and sea moss, two unique Nature's gifts for our health.

To make sea moss apple sauce, use a store-bought organic apple sauce or make your own one from fresh apples (here’s a great apple sauce recipe from the Stay At Home Chef).

Then, add two tablespoons of sea moss gel per serving of apple sauce. Stir well, and that’s it! You’ve got yourself some super nutritious sea moss apple sauce.

4 Best Sea Moss Savory Food Recipes

You can also add sea moss to any savory recipe! We recommend using sea moss gel for creamy or liquid dishes like soups, salsa, dips, salad dressings, and stews. It will make them even thicker and creamier.

But you can also use dry sea moss to add crunchiness to your plate or fresh one for its gelatinous texture and ocean taste.

7. Sea Moss Soup Recipe

Sea moss is an excellent addition to your soups and stews. While you can use raw sea moss (fresh or dry) for cooking savory food, adding sea moss gel requires less prep work and does not alter the flavors of your original recipes. Raw sea moss can have a very salty and ocean-like taste that could ruin your meal if you don’t like it.

Making sea moss soup is ridiculously easy. Actually, you can make sea moss soup simply by adding your two daily tablespoons of sea moss gel directly into your bowl of soup right before eating it!

Remember that while you can warm up sea moss gel, it’s better if it does not boil because high temperatures may destroy some nutrients. Therefore, always add sea moss gel at the end of your recipe, once all the ingredients are cooked and ready to be served.

Here’s a classic leek & potato soup that becomes a nutritional powerhouse with the last-minute addition of sea moss gel:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped leek
  • ½ cup chopped celery
  • 3 cups diced potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup sea moss gel
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 cups walnut milk
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions:

In a large pot, fry the leek and celery in olive oil for a few minutes on medium/high heat.

Add the potatoes and vegetable broth. Boil at low temperature until the potatoes are cooked (soft).

Add the almond milk and sea moss gel, plus salt and pepper as per taste.

With an immersion blender, blend all the ingredients until you get a smooth, creamy soup. Adjust the seasoning to your taste and eat warm.

8. Vegan Caesar Salad Dressing with Sea Moss

Salad dressings are another great opportunity to incorporate your 2 daily tbsp of sea moss gel into your food. You can use sea moss gel or powder to make your dressings.

I've tried both for this Caesar recipe but personally preferred the gel version. Here’s how to make a vegan gluten-free sea moss Caesar salad dressing:

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup hummus
  • 1 tsp spicy mustard
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp capers (finely minced)
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp organic sea moss gel
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

Add hummus, spicy mustard, lemon juice, maple syrup, olive oil, and sea moss gel to a small mixing bowl. Whisk thoroughly to combine evenly. Add the minced capers and garlic. Adjust salt and pepper as per taste. It’s ready!

Use your sea moss salad dressing immediately or keep it in the refrigerator for 5 days maximum.

9. Seaweed Salad recipe

Seaweed salad with sea moss

Seaweed salad is a traditional Japanese side dish. It’s highly nutritious and quite filling, full of dietary fibers, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. While there are numerous health benefits to eating a homemade seaweed salad, you shouldn't consume it more than 2 or 3 times a week to avoid excess iodine.

We're sharing a generic recipe for seaweed salad with sea moss. You can use any dry edible seaweeds that you find at the grocery store.

Ingredients (1 serving):

  • 20 grams of dry mixed seaweed (sea moss, nori, kelp, wakame, kombu, dulse, or others)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 scallion (finely chopped)

For the salad dressing:

  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cane sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ginger juice
  • Salt as per taste
Organics Nature dry wildcrafted sea moss

Instructions:

Put the dried seaweed mix in a bowl and soak it in cold water for about 15 minutes, so they rehydrate.

Meanwhile, prepare the salad dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a bowl until you get a smooth texture.

Pour the rehydrated seaweeds into a colander and rinse thoroughly. Squeeze as much water from the seaweeds as you can with your hands.

Place the seaweed mix in a bowl or a small plate. Pour the salad dressing on top. Then, add the sesame seeds and chopped scallions.
