What Are Sea Moss Benefits for Women?
It's clear that sea moss has a lot to offer. There are numerous advantages to integrating this alga into your routine, but to get you started, here are the 10 key benefits that specifically pertain to women.
1. Sea moss helps regulate menstrual cycles
While research still lacks on the topic, many women use sea moss to regulate their menstrual cycle. Indeed, several nutrients found in sea moss are proven to help with hormonal balance, period cramp relief, and essential mineral supplementation during menstruation.
In most cases, mineral deficiencies are involved in a woman's menstrual problems, cramps, and premenstrual syndrome. By supplementing the body with the essential minerals it needs to go through a complete menstrual cycle, taking sea moss before, during, and after your periods may help correct menstruation-related pain and discomforts including:
- Period cramps
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Iron deficiency caused by anemia during heavy periods
- Hormonal imbalance
- Low energy levels
- Mood swings
- Skin problems
- Sleep disorders

2. It can boost female fertility
It may seem new to most Americans, but Jamaican women have been using sea moss for sex and fertility purposes for centuries. While the effects of sea moss on female fertility are yet to be backed up by science, cultural beliefs and consumers' success stories are numerous.
It does make sense, though. Among the dozens of minerals and vitamins found in Chondrus crispus, 4 are scientifically proven to improve women's fertility: folate, iodine, zinc, and iron.
According to the US food database, one serving of sea moss (10 grams) contains 18,2 micrograms of folate, a natural form of folic acid. Besides being necessary for your baby’s development, folic acid helps you get pregnant in the first place! Women who are trying to conceive are recommended to get at least 400 mcg of folic acid a day. Adding sea moss to your diet considerably helps increase your folic acid intake.
Sea moss is also one of the natural foods with the highest iodine content. Iodine deficiency may impair a woman’s fertility as well as the fetus’s neurodevelopment during pregnancy.
Finally, sea moss is a great source of zinc and iron, two key nutrients that support female fertility. Research suggests that women with low zinc levels take longer to get pregnant. Similarly, women with fertility issues are recommended to increase their iron intake through natural foods and supplements.

3. A great supplement during pregnancy
Chondrus crispus naturally contains a surprising number of pregnancy-supporting macro and micronutrients and is similar to prenatal vitamins in many ways.
It’s a natural source of folic acid, the #1 supplement to have for a healthy pregnancy. Besides, it contains significant amounts of prenatal minerals and vitamins such as iodine, calcium, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D, zinc, iron, and others.
As a bonus, applying sea moss gel on your belly bump helps prevent stretch marks!
Sea moss is safe to take for pregnant and breastfeeding women, but make sure not to exceed the recommended daily dosage. Because of its high content of iodine, consuming too much of it could be dangerous for both you and the baby's health.
Poor-quality sea moss products may contain toxic levels of heavy metals which aren’t safe for pregnancy. All products sold at Organics Nature are tested and guaranteed with the lowest pregnancy-safe levels of heavy metals.

4. Sea moss gel improves skin appearance
Not only does sea moss enhances women’s health, but it’s also proven to have great natural properties for skin and hair appearance. It has recently become one of the most sought-after products in the beauty space.
Applying sea moss gel on your skin helps clear clogged pores, fight acne and pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, hydrate, fade dark spots, prevent aging effects, and promote collagen production for better skin elasticity.

5. It promotes hair growth and beauty
Caribbean women use Jamaican moss as an all-natural hair product. Besides being a great hair moisturizer, its high levels of vitamin E and antioxidants promote hair growth and strength. Using sea moss gel on your hair like a conditioner removes the toxins and leaves your hair smoother and shinier than with chemical conditioners.

6. It supports weight loss for women (and men!)
Being overweight is dangerous for your health and losing these extra few kilos may very well save you from serious health complications in the future. While weight loss concerns both men and women, 91% of American women have attempted to control their weight at least once in their life.
Despite what you may read on other websites, sea moss does not make you lose weight. Instead, it can support your weight loss program.
First, it’s a very low-calorie natural food. A 10-gram portion is packed with healthy nutrients but only counts for 5 calories. There’s zero fat but some Omega-3 essential fatty acids, no cholesterol, no sugar, and little protein. But because it’s full of dietary fibers, a small portion of Irish moss helps regulate your appetite and make you stay full.
Seaweeds are also proven to help reduce body fat and improve metabolism by burning more calories for better use, which ultimately results in weight loss. Sea moss also acts as a prebiotic to improve gut health.
While it seems insignificant, adding 2 tbsp only of sea moss gel to your morning smoothies can make a big difference and considerably boost your weight loss diet!

7. It helps regulate thyroid function and hormonal balance
While thyroid and hormone issues can affect both men and women, the risk is 10 times higher for women than for men. About 1 in 8 women are affected by a thyroid imbalance at some point in their lives.
Sea moss may help regulate thyroid function, primarily by supplementing the body with iodine. It’s one of the natural foods with the highest iodine content and is recommended when women suffer from hypothyroidism. Iodine is essential to produce thyroid hormones, but the body can’t produce it on its own, so it must be brought by foods or supplements like sea moss.
Iodine supplementation must be supervised by a medical team. Too much iodine could have the opposite effect and be dangerous for your health.
8. Sea moss can also enhance your sexual life
In the Caribbean, Jamaican sea moss is considered a powerful sex elixir that increases libido and sex drive for both men and women.
This aphrodisiac is also used as a lubricant for women with vaginal dryness. It’s also believed to help prevent and treat yeast infections.
There’s no research available on the subject yet. But there’s no reason why you should try it for yourself as sea moss is an all-natural ingredient with very little risk and side effects.
While you're at it, why don't you slip a bit of sea moss gel into your partner's drink? According to Jamaicans, it improves male erectile function and boosts testosterone levels too!

9. It may delay menopause and reduce risks of estrogen-related cancers
Research still lacks on the topic, and we don’t want to jump ahead of it, but one study is particularly interesting regarding sea moss benefits for women. It was conducted on Japanese women who regularly consume bladderwrack, a type of brown seaweed similar to sea moss in many ways.
Preliminary findings suggest that the consumption of such seaweeds may prolong the length of the menstrual cycle in women and have anti-estrogenic effects that reduce the risks of estrogen-related cancers.
10. It’s a mood-boosting seaweed!
Last on the list of sea moss benefits for women: its mood-boosting properties. The seaweed is packed with potassium, antioxidants, flavonoids, and Omega-3, which makes it one of the best mood-uplifting foods just like chocolate, bananas, berries, and others.
Ultimately, besides promoting women's overall health and body functions, consuming sea moss regularly also helps keep the blues away and fight stress and anxiety.
Is Sea Moss Safe for Women?
Sea moss is generally considered safe both for women and men. It’s a very potent natural ingredient though. Because of its high content of minerals and vitamins, it must be consumed in moderation, and you should not eat too much of it.
The main risks and side effects include mild bowel disturbances, allergic reactions, or blood pressure issues. Sea moss may also have blood-thinning properties, so if you’re on blood-thinning medication, you should ask for your doctor’s advice first.
Serious health complications can come from overconsuming sea moss and include iodine poisoning or ingestion of high levels of heavy metals (rare).
Always stick to the instructions on the label and make sure not to exceed the recommended daily dosage.
As with all matters relating to your health, consult with a doctor to find out whether you should incorporate sea moss into your diet. While there are many clear benefits, it is always a good idea to check with a medical professional before considering any new supplements.
